Need is not homogenous across the GTA. Neighbourhoods that have been historically underserved and populations that face systemic inequities confront unique challenges, and require tailored, community-led solutions.
Need is also not static, and United Way works continuously with community to advance more impactful, innovative, and equitable solutions to poverty’s pressing issues. Through our funding for Special Initiatives, we support a diverse range of projects and programming that is responsive to evolving needs and strategic about the future we are building.
For information on other United Way investments, please see Investing in Community.
In December 2021, United Way, The City of Toronto, and Lifeline Afghanistan teamed up to create the Afghan Resettlement Fund to support incoming refugees from Afghanistan. United Way coordinated the distribution of funds directly to frontline community agencies, helping this refugee population settle into their new home, through housing and employment support, food, clothing and community connections.
